NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 1993Deep in the marrow of West Oakland, electric pumps in the industrial desert of the abandoned phoenix iron works, under the derelict scaffolding of warship craze and the flapping of pigeons and the falling of feathers, in inches of soot and clouds of green gasses, lit by shafts of light piercing dusted air from a thousand windows vibrant red from the setting west, among miles of steel and acres of concrete, the table drill seems simple, small, insignificant. in this gloom of forgotten machinery, under wires which haven''t breathed concrete pumps electricity in years, electric heat pumps there''s the sense--not so much that beauty will one day be guest to the table--but that the table is already guest to great beauty. the old gray tractors--the result of a partnership that later dissolved into the separate ford and ferguson lines--revolutionized postwar farming. these classics have held up to time, held onto collectors'' hearts and held their value ever since.the roadside seller''s price was $1,795. that was about 2 1/2 times what the ford cost new in 1946. but it was also about the going rate at the time. so even though the tractor was older drill than me or my wife, melanie, we bought pumps it on the spot after a test drive.that was in 1984, when we bought our land. we have used the old ford almost continuously ever since. we never regretted the purchase. with a minimum electric of service and repairs--lots of grease, irregular oil changes, some new wiring and radiator hoses--the 2n has never failed us. equipped with a two-bottom plow, 5-foot rotary mower, disk harrow and scraper blade, it has done all we asked of it, everything from plowing snow off of our 600-foot driveway to mowing or tilling the better part of our 20 acres, year after year. and all for less than what most suburbanites spend these days drill on a riding lawn mower. before you begin, also call a building pumps inspector to determine necessary posthole depths for your project and to find out if you need a building permit. they''re generally required for fences and decks.have your layout all set--time is moneyscrupulously lay out your postholes before electric renting an auger so you can be using the tool the whole time you''re paying for it. pay close attention to locations and mark the exact centers of the holes with stakes. it''s nearly drill impossible to move or reposition a hole once you''ve started boring, so it''s important to begin in the right spot. if you need wider holes than the auger will drill pumps or if you need to slightly reposition electric a hole, you drill can easily carve pumps away the sides with hand tools. ©2003 www.electricdrills.net.
